Cuenca, Ecuador | Travel Photography
A couple weeks ago I (JD) had the opportunity to travel to Cuenca, Ecuador to help lead a workshop on High Performance Computing. While I was there, I of course spent all the free time I could taking photos in this beautiful city nestled in the mountains of Ecuador. One of the coolest things visually about the city was the magnitude of the street art that could be seen everywhere you traveled around the city. There was tons of it near the hotel where we stayed and I tried to capture a good amount of it as we drove around the city. While most time was spent teaching at the university I still had a good amount of time that I got in the evenings to photograph the city after dinner. Most of that work had to be done in the dark as the sun set sometime during the six o'clock hour which didn't leave much daylight after teaching. In hindsight I would have brought my travel tripod, however it didn't make it on this trip, note for next time. While I didn't have the help of the tripod it helped force me to be a bit more creative with shots, sometimes using long exposure artistically. Also I decided at times to push the ISO performance of our cameras a bit to see how the D810 would hold up, and most of the time I was quite impressed. I definitely relied on its dynamic range capabilities to bring back a stop or two of light on some shots. Some of my favorite photos are here below, hope you enjoy! This work by JD Maloney is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License.
