On our way back from Iowa on Sept. 27th we pulled off to a small town off the highway in hopes of catching a shot of the Supermoon Lunar eclipse that was set to take place that night.  The last time we had both a super moon and a lunar eclipse at the same time was back in the 80's and we weren't set to repeat until 2033...so this was fairly rare.  Unfortunately at our stop clouds blocked all that could be seen and we made the call to continue our journey home.  About 15 minutes later (and about 25 minutes until the start of the eclipse) as we drove down the interstate the clouds began to part and we could start to see the moon.  A quick exit later we hunted around and found a spot off a country road and set up shop and began to photograph the eclipse.  After a couple of quick patches of clouds in the beginning the skies were totally clear for viewing the moon, a seemingly impossible condition if you looked at the sky 30 minutes earlier.  Luckily those quick patches never blocked the moon for more than 3 minutes, our interval of shooting for our "progress" camera.  By the end of the night we had gotten a ton of good images and it gave us a chance to do our first real workout on the new Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E lens, which came just in time to give us 300mm more reach than we had before (Nikon 70-200mm). Below are a few of the images we captured that night and a composite of all the phases, hope you enjoy!
